Understanding Popular Bet Types

Sports betting offers many ways to wager and win. Straight bet (Money Line, Point Spread or Total (Over/Under), Parlay, Teaser bets, Futures bets, Round Robin bets, Proposition bets and In-Play bets are among the most popular options. Before you begin, here are the basics you need to know.

Sports Betting Terms

Action- A sports wager (or bet) of any kind.
Cover- Winning by more than the point spread.
Line- The current odds or point spread of a specific event.
Off the board- A game in which no bets are being offered.
Opening Line- The earliest line posted for a specific event
Push- When an event ends with no winner or loser for wagering purposes (the wager ends in a “tie”)

Money Line

Money Line (Represents a wager made on a specific team to win an event without using the Point Spread. The Money Line is expressed in terms of a $100 bet).
As an example, if the odds board shows:
• New York Yankees -140
• Boston Red Sox +120
A bet on the Yankees (the favorite) costs more; you would need to place a $140 wager for a chance to win $100.
A bet on the Red Sox (the underdog) pays more; a $100 wager gives you a chance to win $120.

Point Spread

Point Spread (Represents margin of points in which the favored team must win the event by to cover the point spread. Bets on the point spread are typically offered at 11 to 10 odds. A player must wager $11 to win $10 for a total payout of $21.)
If a minus (-) sign is before the spread number, this means the team is favored to win and must win the event by more than the number value listed.
If a plus (+) sign is before the spread number, this tells you the team is the underdog and the sportsbook will add the number value listed to this team’s final score to determine the result of the event.
As an example, if the odds board shows:
• New England Patriots -5.5
• Buffalo Bills +5.5
To win a bet on the Patriots, the Patriots must win by six points or more.
To win a bet on the Bills, the Bills must either win the game or lose by five points or less.

Total or Over/Under

Total or Over/Under (Bets on the total are typically offered at 11 to 10 odds. A player must wager $11 to win $10 for a total payout of $21.)
The total is the specified estimate of the two teams combined score at the end of a game. When placing over/under bets, you are betting either the game total will go over or under the total set by the Sports Book. on the actual final combined score versus the set total.
As an example,
• The Sports Book sets a total of 9.5
• The Yankees beat the Red Sox (5-4)
• The game total is 9 (5+4)
To win the over bet, the two teams' final combined score must be 10 or more runs. In this example, the over bet loses and the under bet wins.

Parlay

Parlay bets are wagers where you combine multiple selections into a single bet. The benefit of a parlay is the payout because you can bet a small amount and win big. With a parlay, all your chosen bets must-win for the parlay to payout. If one of the games you bet on ties, this is called a “push” and your parlay ticket is still “live”.

Teaser

Teasers are parlay bets that allow you to shift a point spread in your favor by certain designated amounts. As a result, your payout is reduced, but your chances of winning are better. You must tease at least two games together.

Futures

Futures are wagers placed on an event typically settled on a later date. For example, placing a wager on a team to win the championship in their designated sport (i.e. 2020 Pro Hockey Championship).

Round Robin

A round-robin is a series of parlay bets. For example, a three-team round-robin consists of three 2 team parlay bets (Team A + Team B, Team A + Team C, Team B + Team C). If Team A loses their game, you still have an opportunity to win on your parlay of Team B + Team C.

Proposition Bet (Prop Bet)

Proposition bets are individual bets that can occur with a given game or event.

In-Play Bet (Live Wagering)

In-Play bets are wagers on either the point spread, money line or total of a game or events after the game/event has started.

Summary of Wagering Rules

1.       Introduction

a.       The Complete House Rules govern the use of the Sticks Sportsbook & Grill (“Sticks”). When placing a wager with the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort, the patron is therefore agreeing that the patron has read, understood and will adhere to the Complete House Rules.

b.       The operation of this Sportsbook is subject to the regulations promulgated by the St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Gaming Commission and the New York State Gaming Commission.

c.        Any dispute relating in any way to the use of the Sportsbook should be submitted by contacting a Winners Club Cage & Sports Book Manager or Winners Club Cage Supervisor during normal hours of operation.

d.       Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort reserves the right to make changes to the wagering limits, pay-out limits and offerings at any time.

e.       Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort may update, amend, edit or supplement the Complete House Rules at any time.

f.        Any reference in the Complete House Rules or the Summary to words/objects that appear singularly also applies to plural. References to gender are non-binding and to be treated for information purposes only.

g.       Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort will not accept any wager from persons under the age of eighteen (18) or persons prohibited from engaging in sports wagering or gaming.  Some examples are: No collegiate or professional athlete, referee, official, coach, manager, handler or athletic trainer or employee or contractor of a team or athletic organization can wager on events that they are directly or indirectly involved in.

2.       Definitions

a.       “Error” is a mistake, misprint, misinterpretation, mishearing, misreading, mistranslation, spelling mistakes, technical hazard, registration error, transaction errors, manifest errors, force majeure and/or similar. Examples of errors include, but are not limited to:  Wagers accepted during technical problems that would otherwise not have been accepted; Wagers placed on events/offers that have already been decided;  Wagers on markets containing incorrect participants; Wagers placed at odds that are materially different from those available in the general market at the time the wager was placed; Wagers offered at odds which reflect an incorrect score situation; or else, Odds being clearly incorrect given the chance of the event occurring at the time the wager was placed.

b.       “Influence Wagering” is an act, prohibited by the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort, where a patron, or parties acting in association with a patron, can influence the outcome of a match or an event—directly or indirectly.

c.        “Syndicate Wagering” is an act, prohibited by the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort, where patrons act together to place a series of wagers on the same event or competition. Where there is evidence of patrons acting together in this manner, Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort reserves the right to make the relevant wagers void and/or withhold payment of returns pending the outcome of subsequent investigations.

3.       Wager Acceptance

a.       A wager is not valid until it is confirmed and the ticket has been printed. In cases of uncertainty about the validity of a bet, patrons should contact the Winners Club Cage Management.

b.       Once accepted, a wager will remain valid and cannot be withdrawn. It is the responsibility of the patron to ensure the details of the wagers placed are correct. Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort will under no circumstance accept any responsibility for mistakes (perceived and actual), derived from either Errors as listed in the Complete Wagering Rules, or any other reason, such as but not limited to, incorrect listing of the odds/wagering objects.

c.        Should a dispute arise from any transaction, the transaction server database will be the ultimate authority in resolving such matters.

d.       Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort will only accept cash, chips, and validated sports wagering winning tickets for sports wagers.

e.       The minimum amount for a sports wager is $5.00 for wagers placed at a kiosk or with a cashier. The maximum wager amount permitted is based on the sport, league and type of wager to be placed. Management does not guarantee that a wager for the maximum amount shall be accepted. 

f.        Sticks does not offer wagers on:

i.               any collegiate sport or collegiate athletic event that takes place in New York or a sport or athletic event in which any New York college or university team participates regardless of where the event takes place (provided, however, that AMCR may offer wagers on other games of a collegiate sport tournament or collegiate athletic tournament in which a New York college or university team participates, and on games of a collegiate sport tournament or collegiate athletic tournament that occur outside New York even though some of the individual games or events are held in New York);

ii.             Pari-mutuel horse race;

iii.            any amateur or youth sports event, except collegiate sports events approved by the Commission;

iv.            any event that is not a sports event; and

v.             any sports event on which the Commission deems wagering to be contrary to public policy, either on the Commission’s own initiative or upon Commission affirmation of a request by a league or governing body.

4.       Tickets

a.       Please check your ticket for accuracy, as all tickets are final after leaving the wagering counter. Once a wager is final, tickets will not be altered or voided except at the discretion of the Winners Club Cage management.

b.       No winning wager will be paid without the customer copy of the wagering ticket.

c.        Management is not responsible for lost, stolen, altered or unreadable tickets.

d.       Winning tickets expire after one (1) year from the date of the event.

e.       The time stamp on wagering tickets is Eastern Time zone.

f.        Mail-in instructions for winning tickets are printed on the ticket. Mail tickets or vouchers to:

h.       Mail-in tickets may only be cashed out up to $5,000.00 and are only valid for 365 after the date of the event.  All winnings will be paid in the form of a Prize Check.

5.       Wagering and Pay-Out Limitations

a.       Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort reserves the right to limit the net pay-out on any wager or combination of wagers by a single patron prior to the placement of wagers. This limit may be determined on the specific sport, league and type of wager offer.

b.       All wager selections are subject to pre-imposed limits set solely at Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort’s discretion. Should this limit be reached, a patron has the right to ask to exceed the limit by making a request via Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort management. Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort reserves the right to accept (fully or partially) or reject the said request without any prior notice nor further explanation.

c.        Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort reserves the right to withhold payment and/or to declare wagers void on an event (or series of events), if there is sufficient evidence that any of the following has occurred:  The integrity of the event has been called into question; The price(s) or pool has been manipulated; Game-fixing has taken place, or the game is under investigation of such.

d.       All odds offered are subject to variation. Such fluctuation is determined solely at Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort’s discretion. Wagers are accepted only at the odds available in the wagering platform at the time the wager was accepted by Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort. Odd changes are reflected in real time on electronic signage, automated ticket machines and the Sportsbook Writer over the counter wagering terminals.

e.       When settling wagers, all pay-out calculations will be based on the decimal equivalent of the American odds displayed/chosen at time of wager placement. For example, American odds +100 = 2.00 decimal equivalency. A winning $5.00 wager at +100 odds would pay $10.00—$5.00 winnings + $5.00 initial stake.

6.       Cancellation (Voiding) of Wagers

a.       A wager can be declared void, and will be refunded to the patron in that event.

b.       A parlay wager shall remain valid, even in the event a game which is part of the parlay wager is declared void.

c.        Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort reserves the right to declare a wager void, in full or in part, if any of the following circumstances have occurred: Wagers have been offered, placed and/or accepted due to an Error; Wagers placed while the platform was encountering technical problems, that would otherwise not have been accepted; Influence Wagering; Syndicate Wagering; A result has been affected by criminal actions—directly or indirectly.

d.       A parlay wager shall never include two (2) or more offers where the outcomes may be related. Although Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort takes all necessary steps to prevent such possibilities, in the event that this would happen, Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort reserves the right to void all parts of the parlay wager which include the correlated outcomes.

e.       Wagers can be voided regardless of whether or not the event has been settled.

f.        All wagers placed (and/or accepted) in the following circumstances will be declared void: Pre-game Wagering Wagers placed after the event has started; Wagers placed after a related event was underway and where conditions could have been altered in a direct and indisputable way. For example, late season contests where preceding games/events and the action taking place within them may determine the game strategy and likely outcome of later contests. In-game Wagering • Wagers placed at an incorrect price due to delayed or failed “Live” coverage; • Wagers placed on offers after the offers have occurred, or after an event which could normally be deemed as leading to the outcome has happened or is happening; Wagers placed on odds which represent a different score than the actual.

7.       Disclaimer and Priority

a.       Guests who engage in Sports Betting must be 18 years of age or older.

b.       Any complaints/disagreements toward settlement of any wager offer, must be brought to Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort’s attention within fourteen (14) days of the initial settlement in order to fully investigate.

c.        Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort reserves the right to suspend the status of any affected wagers until the completion of an investigation.

d.       These rules are applicable to all transactions with Sticks, and may be supplemented with other rules. In the event of ambiguity, priority should be considered in the following order: • Rules and conditions published in conjunction with an offer and/or campaign; and • If the published rules and conditions are inconclusive, reference will be made to the Complete Wagering Rules, unless Specific Sports Wagering Rules declare otherwise.

8.       General Wagering Rules

a.       Common Terms of Reference

i.               “In-game wagering” is where it is possible to wager during an ongoing game or event.

ii.             The lock time shown on tickets, kiosks and digital signage is for informational purposes only. Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort reserves the right to suspend, fully or partially, the wagering activity.

iii.            The stated lock time for pre-game wagers will coincide with the start of each offered event/market. No pre-game wagers will be accepted on an event after the official start of an event. Management shall void any wagers received after the lock time disclosed for such wager

iv.            The lock time for in-game wagering will vary based on the start, progression and/or completion of the specified action within live competition. Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort reserves the right to determine when and on which games/events to offer in-game wagering.

b.       Wager Types

i.               Moneyline (to win) is a wager on the outcome of a game or event, i.e. who will win.

ii.             Spread wagering (“Point spread” in Football and Basketball, “Run Line” in Baseball, “Puck Line” in Hockey or “Handicap”) is a wager on whether the chosen outcome will be victorious once the listed spread/line is added/subtracted to the game/period/total score. In those circumstances where the result after the adjustment of the spread/line is exactly equal to the wagering line, then all wagers on this offer will be declared a push and wagers will be refunded.

iii.            “Over/Under” (Totals) is a wager on the amount of a predefined occurrence (e.g. points, runs, goals). Should the total amount of the listed occurrence be exactly equal to the wagering line, then all wagers on this offer will be declared a push and wagers will be refunded.

iv.            Futures (“Outright” or “Place”) wagering is where it is possible to choose from a list of alternatives and wager on the eventuality that a participant/team wins or places within a specified position in the classification of the listed event/competition.

v.             Three (3)-way Moneyline is where it is possible to wager on three (3) outcomes of a game or event. The options are: Home team to win, Tie, or Away team to win.

c.        Parlay/System Wagers/Round Robins 

i.               With pre-game wagering, it is possible to combine up to twelve (12) different games/outcomes on a single wagering ticket. Patrons can choose their own single bet or place parlays containing between two (2) and twelve (12) different legs (individual games/outcomes). Combining different parlays on a single wagering ticket is sometimes called Round Robin wagering.

ii.             With In-game wagering, it is possible to combine up to twelve (12) different offers on a single wagering ticket as a parlay bet. All selected games/offers in a parlay must be included on the wagering ticket and no other parlay option (Example: singles, doubles, etc.) which exclude one (1) or more games/offers are available, i.e. Round Robins are not available for In-game betting parlays.

iii.            The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort reserves the right to limit the amount of combinations due to what is known as outcome dependency.

d.       Result Settlement

i.               Settlement of wagers will not include and is not limited to any changes deriving from and/or attributable to: disqualifications, penalizations, protests, sub judice results and/or successive changes to the official result after the event has been completed and the result has been announced, even preliminarily.

ii.             Occurrences which have not been sanctioned and/or acknowledged by the game/match/event officials (e.g. disallowed touchdowns) will not be taken into account toward the settlement of the bet.

iii.            All wager offers related to games/matches/events which do not take place or are awarded a result through a forfeit/“walk-over” decision will be declared void and wagers will be refunded.

iv.            Settlement of wager offers, such as, but not limited to, stolen bases, sacks, shots, shots on target, ball possession, assists, rebounds, etc. will be based according to the definition with which the official governing body issues said statistics.

v.             When placing Futures (“Outright” or “Place”) wagers, no wagers will be refunded based on either a participant not participating or having withdrawn from an event (both prior and during), unless otherwise stated.

vi.            In a “Head-to-Head” between two (2) or three (3) participants, for wagers to be considered valid, all listed participants must start the particular round/event which the wager refers.

9.       General Wagering Rules

a.       Football

i.               Football games and any games/events not specifically listed must be held within one week of the originally scheduled date/location (location is a geographical area or city, but not restricted to a specific arena or venue) to be considered action unless otherwise specified in writing by Sticks.

ii.             Unless otherwise stated, all wagers on Football are determined based on the result after the game is over, including overtime.

iii.            All offers will be declared void unless fifty-five (55) minutes of play have been completed, except for those where the outcome of which have been decided prior to the abandonment and could not possibly be changed regardless of future events.

iv.            “Head-to-Head” and “Over/Under” wagers involving one or more players’ performance in the game/league are considered valid, provided that all listed players participate in the game/league at some stage for wagers to stand.

v.             All bets for forfeited games will be voided.

vi.            Forfeited games will officially count towards regular season wins, a loss for the team who forfeits and a win for their opponent. 

b.       Baseball

i.               Regular season Baseball games must be played on the scheduled date/location (location is a geographical area or city, but not restricted to a specific arena or venue) to be considered action unless otherwise specified in writing by Sticks

ii.             Unless otherwise stated, wagers on Baseball are determined based on the result after any eventual extra innings, regardless of the amount of innings played.

iii.            A wager is declared void on a cancelled or postponed game which has not started, or in the case of a result not having been issued within twelve (12) hours of the scheduled start time.

iv.            Baseball bets have action at the stated odds regardless of the starting pitcher for either team.

v.             Major League Baseball games are official after 5 innings of play, or 4½ innings if the home team is leading. If a game is subsequently called or suspended, the winner is determined by the score after the last full inning unless the home team ties the score or takes the lead in the bottom half of the inning in which the game was suspended. In that case the winner will be determined by the score at the time the game is called. (This rule holds for betting purposes even if the game is suspended and/or completed on a different day than it began).

vi.            When wagering on Totals, Run Lines or Propositions the game must go the regulation 9 innings, or 8½ innings if the home team is leading, or for scheduled 7 inning games, the game must go 7 full innings or 6 ½ innings if the home team is leading. Otherwise it will constitute a 'no-action' wager, and all money will be credited accordingly.

vii.          In specified inning wagers, game must go full specified innings to be official, unless the home team is leading the bottom half of specified inning prior to completion of specified innings(s). For money line, totals, and run lines, game must go the full specified innings.

viii.         All future wagers on baseball are “action” regardless of team relocation, change to a team name, season length or playoff format. Team(s) must complete at least 160 regular season games for MLB season win total wagers to have action, unless otherwise specified

c.        Basketball

i.               Regular season Basketball games must be played on the scheduled date/location (location is a geographical area or city, but not restricted to a specific arena or venue) to be considered action unless otherwise specified in writing by Sticks.

ii.             A wager on Basketball is determined based on the result after the game is over, including overtime, unless otherwise stated.

iii.            All offers will be declared void unless forty-three (43) minutes of play have been completed for US pro basketball OR thirty-five (35) minutes for NCAA, WNBA, NBA Summer League and European Basketball, except for those where the outcome of which have been decided prior to the abandonment and could not possibly be changed regardless of future events.

iv.            NBA Futures are settled based on the results provided by the governing association (NBA):

v.             Regular Season Props:

vi.            1. Results are based on per games averages by an official governing association (NBA).

vii.          (2) Player must qualify for title per NBA statistical qualification minimums, to be settled as the winner. For NBA Regular Season League Leaders, a player must play 70% of their team’s games (58 in a 82-game season) as per NBA.

d.       Ice Hockey

i.               Regular season Hockey games must be played on the scheduled date/location (location is a geographical area or city, but not restricted to a specific arena or venue) to be considered action unless otherwise specified in writing by Sticks

ii.             Settlement of player related wagers in a specific game will be based on the result after the end of the 3rd period (Regular Time), unless otherwise stated.

iii.            For the purpose of settlement, “Over/Under” wagers referring to Total Goals Scored in the game, including any eventual goals scored in Overtime and Penalty Shoot-outs, will be settled by counting only one (1) goal for the winning team, regardless of how goals are scored by either team during the Overtime/Penalty Shoot-out.

iv.            Unless specifically stated or implied within the offer, all wagers on Ice Hockey are determined based on the result at the end of Regular Time (i.e. end of 3rd Period).

v.             Unless otherwise stipulated in individual Hockey sports wager rules, results are official after 55 minutes of play.

e.       Soccer

i.               Soccer games must be played on the scheduled date and location (location is a geographical area or city, but not restricted to a specific arena or venue) to be considered action unless otherwise specified by Sticks

ii.             A club team playing a European competition is classed as playing at Home if the event is moved from the club’s usual ground to a ground within their national boundaries.

iii.            Regular time for soccer is ninety (90) minutes including any added/injury time.

iv.            Three (3)-way Moneyline wagers include the option of a tie. The three (3) options are: Home team to win, Tie, or Away team to win.

f.        Golf

i.               Golf events must have tournament play within the scheduled week and on the scheduled course to be considered action unless otherwise specified in writing by Sticks.

ii.             The results are official for wagering purposes provided that at least one round has been completed by all players in the field and a winner is declared by the tournament’s governing body.

iii.            Wagers on players who start the tournament but withdraw voluntarily or are disqualified will be settled as losing wagers, unless the result of the offer which the wager refers to is already determined.

g.       Boxing/MMA

i.               Boxing and MMA fights must take place within 1 week of the given date and time to be considered action unless otherwise specified by Sticks.

ii.             All offers will be settled according to the official result of the relevant governing body immediately as declared by the ring announcer at the end of the fight.

iii.            The bell (buzzer, etc.) is sounded signifying the start of the opening round, the bout is considered official for wagering purposes, regardless of the scheduled length.

(a.)         A full round is one in which the bell (buzzer, etc.) sounds, signifying the conclusion of the round. 

(b.)         If a fighter is counted out or the bout is officially stopped prior to the next bell (buzzer, etc.), the round is not considered a full round for wagering purposes. 

(c.)         A “half round” is the scheduled round divided by two.  For example, 1:30 into the 6th round of a 3 minute per round fight is considered 5 ½ rounds for wagering purposes.  If the fight ends exactly half way through the round, the “over” will be considered the winner.

iv.            Offers on matches declared “No Contest” or “Technical draw” will be settled as void, except for those offers where the outcome has been decided prior to the decision and could not possibly be changed regardless of future events, which will be settled according to the decided outcome.

h.       Tennis

i.         All future wagers on tennis are “Action” regardless if player begins play.

ii.       Tennis matches must take place within one week of the original start time to be considered action unless otherwise specified by Sticks.

iii.      At least one set of the match must be completed. If less than one set is completed, then all wagers will be considered no action. For example, if a player retires from a game when one set has already been completed, all wagers will stand, with the player progressing to the next round deemed as the winner. Wagers on all other tournaments or matches (such as ITF or exhibition matches) and wagers on other markets (i.e. other than match betting markets) will be voided if a player or pairing retires from a game (regardless of whether the retirement occurs during or following the first set) unless, in the case of wagers on other markets, the outcome of the wager had been unequivocally determined prior to the time of the retirement (in which case, the wager shall stand and shall be settled accordingly).

iv.      If a match is not completed in full then all wagers on Propositions and Live Betting will be deemed “no action” unless the relevant wagering option has already been decided. For example, a wager on the "First Set Winner" will stand if the first set was fully completed before play was suspended.

v.       In the event of any of the following circumstances, all wagers will stand:

(a.)     A change of playing surface

(b.)     A change of venue

(c.)      A change from indoor court to outdoor court or vice versa

(d.)     The match is delayed or postponed due to inclement weather/bad light and is completed on a later date.

i.         Auto Racing

i.         Auto Racing events must take place within 8 days of the original start time to be considered action unless otherwise specified in writing by Sticks.

ii.       Match-up wagers are accepted on drivers only, not team or car.

iii.      For driver match-up propositions, one driver is picked to finish in front of the other driver.  Drivers need not win or finish the race.

iv.      For over/under, cautions, lap leader or lead change propositions, all scheduled laps must be run or wagers will be deemed “No Action”. 

v.       Once a race has started, match-ups and proposition wagers are “Action” regardless of when race runs to conclusion.

vi.      All future wagers on Auto Racing are “Action” regardless if driver starts or qualifies.

vii.    The official winner at the conclusion of the race will be the winner for betting purposes.  Any subsequent changes will not be recognized.
